The UC Santa Cruz group is one of the juggernauts (along with Ensembl) of modern genomics. These groups have providing the initial automated human genome assembly and annotation as well as comparative work on lots of other vertebrates.
The tools were produced through in a large part by work of Jim Kent in collaboration with David Haussler and Webb Miller.
